Resin art: glossy product, tight margin
Resin art is one of the most photogenic Etsy categories — the depth, the gloss, the suspended objects in clear epoxy all photograph beautifully. It's also one of the categories where the listing photo most consistently overstates the margin. Resin and pigments are expensive, molds wear out, every piece needs cure time, and the fee stack on a $38 piece is meaningful.

That's before factoring breakage. Resin pieces are heavy and rigid, which means dropped boxes break corners and edges. Insurance covers buyer refunds; it doesn't cover your labor or material loss. A 5% breakage rate (realistic for ground shipping) cuts your effective margin by 1–2 percentage points.
The common mistake: charging by piece instead of by weight
Resin sellers often price like jewelry: per piece. The problem is that resin pieces vary wildly in mass — a 4-piece coaster set weighs 1.5 lbs, a charcuterie tray weighs 6 lbs. Materials cost scales with weight. Pricing per piece ignores that.
The other common failure: not amortizing mold cost. A silicone mold costs $30–80 and produces 30–80 pieces before degrading. That's $1–2.50 of mold cost per piece — easy to overlook, and it eats real margin if you don't include it in pricing.
How to fix it
- Price by weight class, not by piece. Tiered pricing across small, medium, large makes sense for the category.
- Amortize mold cost explicitly — track how many pieces each mold produces and add that cost into your pricing.
- Use rigid box packaging. It's $0.50–1 more than padded mailers but cuts breakage by 70%+.
- Off-Site Ads above the cap matter for large pieces. A $700 commissioned epoxy table would be $105 OSA at 15%, capped at $100.
- Bundle accessories (4 coasters + tray, 6 coasters + holder) to lift AOV without adding fee drag proportionally.
